{"id":152,"date":"2021-04-12T15:33:30","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T15:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.techrity.website\/WordPress\/?p=152"},"modified":"2021-04-15T16:04:00","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T16:04:00","slug":"techrityiwd2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.techrity.org\/WordPress\/2021\/04\/12\/techrityiwd2021\/","title":{"rendered":"TECHing The Young: Techrity IWD2021 Educational Outreach Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The impact of educational outreach programs in schools can be felt on the academic, physiological, and psychological traits of the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various barriers prevent many young ones, even the young female, from starting a career in tech at an early age. One of such barriers is the lack of sensitization of an early career start in tech, even as a secondary school student, limited availability of resources and materials for learning, as well as a Mentor, to guide and track progress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Techrity&#8217;s talent development scheme called the <a href=\"https:\/\/techrity.org\/kickstart\">Kickstart program<\/a> is aimed at solving these problems. We embarked on an outreach program tagged: <strong>TECHing the Young<\/strong> in various secondary schools in a bid to educate the young ones on the need to start a career in tech at a young age to boycott the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-15\/nigeria-unemployment-rate-rises-to-second-highest-on-global-list\">unemployment problem<\/a> faced in Nigeria. The outreach program was embarked on to commemorate the <strong>International Women&#8217;s Day<\/strong> held on 8th March 2021, and also to sensitize the female gender and educate them on the opportunities for females in technology, this was done as part of our commitment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal5\">UN SDGs 5<\/a>: Bridging the gap in gender disparity in the tech industry.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"335\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/BP2aaaFmpVI6-3YaJIkxCmnXyHGMLx3_bSUqLr8Y-LVXfARF_Hm16kWcyH7lYUWMTzQiN-BeZrWFggR6LShZMx7tDjxmuBVmHfNu_78dAtITHeSnY1GZvslKsJerdPKHt4_oCpIH\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outreach program featured talks centered on careers in tech, the need to start their careers early, as well as showcasing successful young talents in the tech industry such as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coderoflagos\">Opemipo Disu<\/a>, the 15-year-old developer and IBM champion from Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.techrity.website\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/OpemipoDisu-1024x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.techrity.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/OpemipoDisu-1024x1024.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/wp.techrity.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/OpemipoDisu-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/wp.techrity.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/OpemipoDisu-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/wp.techrity.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/OpemipoDisu-768x768.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/wp.techrity.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/OpemipoDisu-1200x1200.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/wp.techrity.org\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/OpemipoDisu.jpeg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Opemipo Disu aka the 15y.o developer and IBM Champion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Two students who showed great enthusiasm were awarded scholarships to enable them to kickstart their tech journey. These things were all made from cartons, D.C motors and batteries. For the fan, he used something like a blade to act as the propeller so an amount of air touches you when it is turned on. The car moves with help of the D.C motor connected to the back tyre under the car. The Dispenser is a manual one, so it had no use for the D.C motor. Chijioke&#8217;s creativity and innovation are what earned him the scholarship to further enhance his creative flair and help him digitally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/9nhQBVKpbri6w4FGIR5ZuezwQskckjNEDkLDcO7tAnzrPaqaMpR60dO-j5Q_X_Kro5qz-aExTGfCiuKVYwmTjhePBdez8cQz8B_Gnm7KIMWiVkj-mTI2dC9O7BfHuiWtglTjN3hO\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Chijioke &#8211; Winner of Techrity Kickstart Scholarship Award and Owanate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The recipients of  <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/techrity.org\/kickstart\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/techrity.org\/kickstart\" target=\"_blank\">Techrity&#8217;s Kickstart Program<\/a> will be given a laptop, a mentor as well as data support, to help guide these young minds to early career exploits in technology. The mentors assigned to these young ones are responsible for their growth and progress in technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Few students were also awarded cash prizes for their great performances. These students are David Bob, Emmanuel Ekeh, Prince Onuzulike, all of Inama International Secondary School and Miracle Eboseh of Hybrid International Academy.
